Peruvian authorities announced today that they have closed the tourist gem of the Incas, the archaeological site of Machu Picchu, due to the unrest in the country that began in December.
The Ministry of Culture stated that the closure of the land road, the Inca Trail and access to the fortress was ordered due to the situation in the country. The railway access has been closed for several days because the protesters damaged the track.
At least 400 tourists, 300 of whom are foreigners, are stuck at the foot of the site.
On December 7, protests for the resignation of President Dina Boluarte began in Peru. 46 people died in the riots.
Machu Picchu was closed on several occasions during the corona virus epidemic.
Machu Picchu, which means “Old Mountain” in the Quechua language, was built during the reign of Emperor Pachacuti (1438-1471) and is located about 100 kilometers from Cuzco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire in the southeast of today’s Peru.
