An off-duty police officer was shot on Wednesday in the small town of Omagh. The police had previously announced that they primarily suspected violent republican extremists such as the New IRA.
The New IRA, which broke away from the Irish Republican Army (IRA), which pursued the union of Northern Ireland and Ireland through terror, has admitted to two attacks in recent years.
